The Cardinals just traded Allen Craig and Joe Kelly for John Lackey. When telling my son about the trade he exclaimed “Joe Kelly?!”. I was surprised the Cards traded Kelly.
Lackey, 35, is 11-7 with a 3.60 ERA in 21 starts and 137 1/3 innings this season. He returned from Tommy John surgery last year to go 10-13 with a 3.52 ERA in 189 1/3 innings. Lackey was a key piece of the pitching staff as the Red Sox marched to the 2013 World Series title.
Lackey’s is under contract for only $500,000 next season thanks to a creative vesting option that was triggered by his elbow reconstruction. That dirt cheap year of control raised his trade value greatly. I am glad Lackey is not a rental. When reading into this trade this makes room for Oscar Tavares. I also just learned that the Redsox sent us Corey Littrell, Littrell, 22, was a starter for Salem of the Class A Carolina League. He is 5-5 with a 3.60 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 100 innings this season.. When looking at Twitter in regards to this trade, I find that Craig is pretty upset. It was reported that Craig hugged Wainwright before Leaving. I am also hearing that the Cardinals are not done yet. Stay tuned.
