Vince Coleman joins the Whitesox

My hopes of the Cardinals  hiring Vince Coleman went by the wayside once again. Today the Whitesox hired Coleman to help the team with there base running during spring training. I have always dreamed of Coleman coming back to help these Cardinals become the running Redbirds once again. Coleman a very prolific base burglar swiped 752 stolen bases. With this in mind Coleman would be such a perfect fit with the Cardinals as an instructor along side with his old team mates Ozzie Smith and Willie McGee. The Cardinals as a team stole 57 bases which made them third worse in stealing in 2014. The players that are known to have speed are Wong, Bourjus, Jay and Heyward. If only these four players could increase stolen base totals with smart base running the Cardinals could score more often and win more games. I wonder who works with the Cardinals in regards to these skills. My message to Coleman……Please give the Cardinals a call when your contract is over with the Whitesox, we would love to have on the team once again.

Jim Edmonds to appear on Housewives of Orange County

King are bringing Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Orange County to St. Louis,.

Edmonds became a Cardinal after leaving the Halos, and he’s now a St. Louis restaurant owner and Fox Sports Midwest broadcaster.

Actually, we would be applauding the Edmondses if the unreal reality show stayed in Missouri from now on, but alas it’s just for some Season 10 segments. St. Louis sites, St. Louis celebrities and St. Louis anti-police fervor are promised. (OK, only two of those are promised.)

Years ago, Edmonds’ second wife, Allison, was rumored to be joining RHOC, but Alexis Bellino got the gig.

So scoreboard for wifey No. 3 Meghan King Edmonds getting the Bravo cameras to come to her. She’s joining returners Vicki Gunvalson, Tamra Barney, Heather Dubrow, Shannon Beador and Lizzie Rovsek–and possibly long-ago RHOC Jeana Keough, whose estranged husband Matt Keough pitched for the Oakland A’s.

Speaking of baseball tie-in’s, do you suppose the Edmondses are setting the RHOC table for the eventual addition of their pal Albert Pujols and his wife?

We can only pray.

Max Scherzer Drama Continues

Yesterday David Price signed a one year deal with the Detroit Tigers for $19.75 Million. Price’s contract is the largest one-year deal for a player who filed for arbitration, topping Max Scherzer’s $15,525,000 agreement with the Tigers last year. The Tigers are now having discussions with James Shields while they have no contact with Max Scherzer. So what’s going on with the St. Louis Cardinals and Max Scherzer at this time? This is what we know, Scherzer has made it known to the Cardinals that he wants to pitch here. The Cardinals have made it known that they are very interested in Scherzer. So where does this relationship go from here? The Cardinals are now able to go  higher on deal’s that average high annual value The Cardinals are known not to give contracts for over long periods of time except for Matt Holliday in which he got seven years for $120MM.. Holliday will be a free agent in 2017.  The Cardinals could make an offer to Max Scherzer at a high value but fewer years. John Morosi  suggests that the Cardinals could offer Scherzer $156MM which would give him the highest AAV ever for a pitcher but would be for at least five years. I strongly believe that Max Scherzer’s drive is to pitch for his hometown team. Max Scherzer for sure would become our #1 ace. Just recently at the Cardinals Winter Warm Up John Mozeliak said that at this time they will not be adding any starting pitchers. When I read this, I knew that as a GM he cannot talk about players that they are involved with. I tend to think if this deal happens with Max Scherzer it will happen before Spring Training.

Edmonds to Open up Second Restaurant in Kirkwood

Last Sunday while driving through Kirkwood I noticed a new restaurant taking over the old Bread Company in Kirkwood that’s located on Manchester and Woodland. I was wondering what type of restaurant this was until I found this article in the St. Louis Business Journal. This looks very promising but I hope the location helps bring in the business its looking for.

Former St. Louis Cardinal Jim Edmonds and restaurateur Mark Winfield are opening their second restaurant in the St. Louis area together after plans to open a restaurant in Clayton fell apart last year.

Winfield’s Gathering Place is set to open Jan. 19 in Kirkwood in the site of the original St. Louis Bread Company location. Winfield said the new restaurant, at 10312 Manchester Road, will feature 26 craft beers and focus on American food: steak, chicken, fish, pastas and the like.

“It’s a gathering place for friends and family to meet and have drinks before a charity event or baseball game or family event, or to have one more drink before they go home,” he said.

The partners spent between $300,000 and $500,000 overhauling the space. They added a full alcohol bar and a chef’s bar, and fashioned an exposed kitchen where patrons can watch the cooks work. Coming aboard as chef is Tony Hilker, who previously worked at Tavern On Main in Belleville.

In their business plan, the partners projected $2.4 million in sales for the first year, but “we obviously want to exceed that,” Winfield said. Winfield and Edmonds each own 45 percent in the restaurant’s controlling company, and they sold another 10 percent stake to friends and family who wanted to invest. They partnered with Pulaski Bank to help finance the new restaurant.

Winfield and Edmonds also own The Precinct at 1900 Locust St. Plans for the two to open a second restaurant in Clayton, a $1 million concept that would have been called Edmonds Parkside Grille, fell through in January of last year. Winfield said at the time, “Financially it did not work for us. The building needed too many renovations to make it cost effective for us.”

Cardinals Sign Lance Lynn

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have reached agreement with right-handed pitcher Lance Lynn on a three-year contract (2015-17), thus avoiding salary arbitration.  Financial terms were not disclosed.

“We are pleased to have reached this agreement with Lance,” stated Cardinals Senior V.P./General Manager John Mozeliak.  “His performance has led to much success for both he and the Cardinals organization, and we look forward to his continued growth as both a pitcher and team leader.”

Drafted by the Cardinals in the 1st round (39th player overall) of the 2008 amateur draft, Lynn has compiled a 49-28 career won-loss mark with a 3.46 ERA in 119 games (97 games started).  Since debuting in 2011, Lynn has been a member of a Cardinals team that has reached the postseason for a franchise-record four consecutive seasons with Lynn having appeared in a franchise-record 23 postseason games.

Lynn’s 48 wins since 2012 are the 3rd-highest amongst National League pitchers, trailing only teammate Adam Wainwright (53) and the Dodgers Clayton Kershaw (51).  Lynn also ranks among N.L. leaders in games started (95-T7th) and innings pitched (581.1-11th) since 2012 and his 59 quality starts since 2012 rank 10th.

Lynn is one of just three pitchers (Max Scherzer, Zack Greinke) in the majors to have won 15 or more games in each of the last three seasons, including a career-high 18 during his 2012 All-Star campaign.  He and Wainwright joined Hall-of-Famer Bob Gibson (1970-72) this past season as the last Cardinals to have struck out 175 or more batters in three consecutive seasons.

Lynn, 27, is ranked 5th among active Major League pitchers in winning pct. (.636) and the Cardinals have gone 60-37 in his 97 career starts.  The Indiana native is 27-12, 2.80 ERA in his 57 career appearances at Busch Stadium III, ranking 4th among the stadium’s all-time wins leaders.

Lynn matched his career high with 33 starts in 2014 and produced a career-low 2.74 ERA (9th in N.L.) while logging a second-straight season with over 200 innings pitched.  The 6-5, 240-pound right-hander twirled his first career complete-game shutout on May 27 vs. the Yankees in a 6-0 win.

With the today’s signing of Lynn, the Cardinals now have three remaining arbitration eligible players: Peter Bourjos, Tony Cruz and Jon Jay.
