Cardinals Acquire Jonathon Broxton from the Brewers

Just when I was crossing my fingers for another bat like Yoenis Cespedes or even Marlon Byrd the Cardinals went out and got another reliever. Since the Cardinals are missing relievers Matt Belisle and Jordan Walden due to injury they felt that Broxton would be the man to help the bullpen. The Cardinals traded their minor league outfielder Malik complete the trade. Broxton does have a $9 million in 2016 and a $2 million buyout.

Broxton, 31, a two time (2009-10) All-Star with the Los Angeles Dodgers, is 36-32 career with a 3.25 ERA and 118 saves (18th among active players).   He’s 1-2 with a 5.89 ERA in 40 games (36.2 IP) with the Brewers this season, including 11 Holds.   The 6-4, 305-pound Broxton is unscored upon in his last seven appearances.  He’s struck out 37 and walked just 10 this season, averaging 9.1 strikeouts/9 IP.

Broxton, who had a career-high 36 saves for the Dodgers in 2009, has appeared in 582 games with the Dodgers (2005-11), Kansas City (2012), Cincinnati (2012-14) and Milwaukee (2014-15).

Collymore was a 10th round draft selection by the Cardinals in 2013 who has been playing for rookie-level Johnson City this season
