Cardinals Looking at Cuban Player Machado

I try to keep my eye on international players since the Cardinals signed Seung Hwan Oh from Korea and Almedys Diaz. With Cuba now opening up we are beginning to see the top crop of players like Yusinel Diaz, Jorge Ona and Jonatan Machado. It so happens that the Cardinals do have a strong interest in Machado according to Ben Badler, he wrote that the Cards will sign him this summer. So what do we know about Machado? He is 16 years young. When he played for Havana in Cuba’s 15U national league in 2014, hitting .336/.387/.451 in 137 plate appearances with nine walks and just five strikeouts, along with five stolen bases in eight tries. He earned a spot on Cuba’s 15U World Cup team that went premium position and has a knack for squaring up the ball. He’s a 70 runner who can play center field and shows good defensive instincts for his age, though his arm is below-average. His swing isn’t the most conventional, as he bars out his front arm, but he’s a high-contact hitter with the ability to hit line drives to all fields and below-average power.I would think he would be a great addition to the Cardinal system since he is so young and has so much up swing. I guess we shall see.
