Kolten Wong sent back to Memphis

I had a strong feeling this was going to happen. The St. Louis Cardinals optioned the 2nd baseman back to Memphis with the expectation that shortstop Jhonny Peralta will be activated from the disabled list Tuesday.

Wong is hitting .222 for the big league club on the season and saw increasingly decreased playing time with Greg Garcia and Jedd Gyorko taking time at 2nd base.

Diaz, meanwhile, has become untouchable in the Cardinals lineup. The shortstop is hitting .328 on the season with eight home runs and a .906 OPS.

The Cardinals are expected to keep Diaz at shortstop with the returning Peralta moving to 3rd base and Matt Carpenter moving to 2nd base, where he has some previous experience. Carpenter has been the Cardinals everyday 3B for the last three seasons, but was the regular 2nd baseman in 2013 before being moved to make way for Wong. Carpenter did make 11 appearances at 2B in 2015, but has not played there this season.

Peralta, meanwhile, has not played 3rd base since 2010 with Detroit. Peralta was the Cardinals everyday shortstop the last two seasons and has yet to play in 2016 due to a thumb injury.
