Cardinals Targeting Carlos Gomez

Well it looks like that Matt Holiday’s broken thumb is pretty bad, he has a fractured right thumb. Holiday

will return to St. Louis on Monday for a follow-up visit with the Cardinals’ hand specialist, Dr. Charles Goldfarb, to determine what course of action he’ll take to heal from a fractured right thumb.

Goldfarb, who happened to be in Chicago on Friday for another purpose, reviewed Holliday’s X-rays and confirmed that Holliday sustained a fracture when he was hit by a 94-mph fastball on Thursday. He’ll visit with Holliday again next week before recommending how the veteran outfielder moves forward. Cardinals GM John Mozeliak  said surgery could be an option. Until the club gets that feedback, it won’t know how likely it is that Holliday will be able to return before the end of the season. So finally Mozeliak is finally looking for help. The Cardinals where looking at Carlos Gomez but they could be outbid by the Mets. Saxon said  in tweet that Gomez is expected to be traded rather than waived and released. Shortly after Gomez’s DFA earlier this week, the Mets were said to be “open” to reacquiring him. Gomez came up through the Mets’ farm system and was lauded as one of the game’s top prospects before he was traded to the Twins as part of the Johan Santana package. The Cardinals will discuss Carlos Gomez and whether a trade is possible with the Houston Astros and putting a claim on Gomez. The center fielder was designated for assignment earlier this week and he’s working his way through the waiver process. The Astros have 10 days to make a trade or choose to release Gomez. So its a waiting game for now
