Cardinals Trade Garcia to Braves

MLB: St. Louis Cardinals at Tampa Bay Rays

Well it looks like the first domino to fall in a series of moves by the Cardinals. I had a feeling that he will be moved, this afternoon the St. Louis Cardinals have parted ways with starting pitcher Jaime Garcia, dealing the left-hander to the Atlanta Braves for prospects.

The Cardinals received second baseman Luke Dykstra and pitchers John Gant and Chris Ellis from the Braves.

Garcia went 10-13 last season and finished with a 4.67 ERA –€” his highest since 2008. After the season, the Cardinals exercised Garcia’s club option for 2017. He’s owed $12 million next season.

Even though the Cardinals picked up Garcia’s 2017 option, the team was rumored to be shopping the lefty. The Cardinals’ starting rotation is already filled with options for next year including Adam Wainwright, Carlos Martinez, Mike Leake, Lance Lynn, Alex Reyes and Michael Wacha.

Garcia, drafted by the Cardinals in 2005, has pitched all eight seasons of his major league career with the club. He was 62-45 with a 3.57 ERA over that span.

Dykstra is the son of former major league outfielder Lenny Dykstra. The 21-year-old batted .304 for Class A Rome and was a South Atlantic League All-Star last season.

Gant, 24, was 1-4 with a 4.86 ERA in 20 games (seven starts) for Atlanta last season.

Ellis, 24, made 28 combined starts for Triple-A Gwinnett and Double-A Mississippi in 2016, going 12-9 with a 4.49 ERA overall.
