According to Cardinals beat writer Jennifer Langosch thinks that Free Agent Sam Fuld would be a good pick up for the Cards as a back up outfielder.
Signing Fuld wouldn’t generate many headlines, but it could offer a low-cost, low-risk move that would give the Cardinals an additional backup option. Given that he’s coming off surgery and may not be wrapped up with his rehab by Opening Day, Fuld may even be willing to sign a Minor League deal laced with incentives.
For a Cardinals club seeking to add athleticism and above-average defenders, Fuld fits the mold. He posted +9 Defensive Runs Saved in ’15 and averaged a DRS of +6 over his last five seasons. His ability to play all three outfield spots would provide welcome flexibility, too.
On the other hand Fuld will face a 12- to 15-month recovery period after he undergoes surgery on a torn rotator cuff, tweets Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the procedure on or before May 18, Fuld said Saturday. Fuld, 34, is now poised to miss all of this year and a sizable portion of the 2017 campaign. He’s scheduled to become a free agent during the offseason.
