Will Martinez make the April Roster?

Jose Martinez was a ten-year minor-league veteran who has yet to crack the majors. In parts of two seasons at Triple-A, Martinez owns a productive .359/.431/.525 batting line over 556 plate appearances. He hasn’t quite maintained the pace he set last year at Omaha. In 2016 the St. Louis Cardinals acquired the Martinez from the Royals by sending cash to Kansas City. So lets fast forward to 2017 Spring Training with the Cardinals in which he is turning some heads with his bat, son far he has gone 7-for-18 (.389), the 18 being the second-most at-bats on the team. In addition to seven hits, he’s scored seven runs and has seven RBIs. He’s walloped three homers and two doubles. And a stat involving Martinez that’s less discussed – he doesn’t strike out much. He has one K this spring, heading into today’s game here at the Twins’ ballpark.

So this leads to ponder will he make it as an extra outfielder for the Cardinals 2017 team. I say yes as long as he keeps hitting the way he is. He has also been working out at first base too giving the Cardinals some flexibility. He might just beat out Pham for the extra outfielder spot. Lets cross our fingers for Martinez.
