Cardinals in the Community

Cardinals Care (#CardsCare) was established to give fans a way of teaming up with Cardinals players and the organization to help children in our community—both on and off the baseball field.  Established in 1997, Cardinals Care has invested over $22 million to support St. Louis area children and built or renovated 22 youth ball fields in local under-resourced neighborhoods.  Most recently, the Cardinals dedicated Adam Wainwright Field at Bob Russell Park in August 2016.

This season marks the 14th year of Cardinals Care’s innovative Redbird Rookies program, a free baseball league for kids who otherwise might not have the opportunity to play.  In addition to providing all the uniforms, gloves, bats, balls and other equipment needed for each team, Redbird Rookies also provides extensive off-field support in the areas of health, education, mentoring and the cultural arts for each of the nearly 4,500 kids who participate in the program each year.  Fans can learn how to support Cardinals Care by visiting cardinals.com/community.

Fans can support Cardinals Care by donating directly at cardinals.com/community or in a variety of ways:

Cardinals Work #4AGreenerGame

For the first time in Busch Stadium’s history, the Cardinals will be purchasing enough Renewable Energy Credits from Ameren Missouri Pure Power to offset 100% of the energy consumption used at the ballpark for every regular season game in 2017.

The Cardinals Knight FM Green Team is a group of volunteers who walk down the aisles of the seating bowl in-between innings collecting recyclables from fans and promoting recycling at Busch Stadium.  In exchange for their services, volunteers are able to watch the game in standing room only sections of Busch Stadium, as collections are only done in-between innings and during pitching changes so as not to disturb fans trying to watch the game.  To volunteer or learn more, visit cardinals.com/green (#4AGreenerGame).

Fredbird Fridays

Every Friday, Fredbird and Team Fredbird will appear somewhere within Cardinal Nation to give away a select number of free tickets or items to lucky fans on a first come, first served basis.  Be sure to join the fun.  To find out where Fredbird will be each week follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/cardinals and on Twitter @Cardinals, or visit cardinals.com/fredbirdfridays for more details (#FredbirdFriday).

Cardinals bring up John Brebbia

brebbia

The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight’s game in Denver that they have purchased right-handed pitcher John Brebbia from Memphis (AAA) and designated right-handed pitcher Miguel Socolovich for assignment.   Brebbia (pronounced Breh-be-ah), who will be making his Major League debut, has been assigned uniform no. 60.

Brebbia, who turns 27 next week, was selected by the Cardinals from the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Triple-A phase of the Rule V draft on December 10, 2015 and he split the 2016 season between Springfield (AA) and Memphis (AAA).

The 6-2, 205-pound reliever was 1-1 with three saves and a 1.69 ERA (26.2 IP) in 15 games (one start) for Memphis, striking out 29 and walking just five.  He’s not allowed a run in his past nine appearances dating to April 25, striking out 19 in 15.0 IP with just three hits allowed.

Brebbia, whose career mark in the minors stands at 9-13 with eight saves and a 3.67 ERA in 126 games, made his lone professional start on April 21 at Colorado Springs (3.0 IP, 2 ER)..

Socolovich, 30, who has spent parts of the past three seasons with St. Louis, was 0-1 with one save in his 15 appearances with the Cardinals this season, striking out 14 in 18.2 innings of work.

Tommy Lasorda Hospitalized

Tommy-Lasorda

I just got an email that Tommy Lasorda has been hospitalized but he is resting comfortably, according to a team official. The club didn’t provide any additional details Saturday on his condition.

Lasorda has spent almost seven decades in the Dodgers’ organization, starting as a minor league pitcher in the Brooklyn system in 1949. He has been a pitcher, coach and manager for the Dodgers, and guided them to their last World Series championship in 1988.

“He means a lot, not only to me personally but to the coaches, players and obviously the players and the city,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before Saturday’s game against Miami.

“I consider him a friend. He’s helped me along the way and supported me, rode me a little when I needed it. Given me a hard time, which is great. To see him in the clubhouse, in my office, watching batting practice is always nice. We can’t wait to get him back out here.”

Lasorda is a special adviser to the chairman. He is a consistent presence in the seats next to the Dodgers’ dugout, where Magic Johnson — part of the team’s ownership group — also sits when he’s in attendance.

Roberts, who played for the Dodgers, said he has appreciated Lasorda’s availability.

“What we as coaches and myself talk to our players about is playing a certain brand of baseball, the way when I was coming up and growing up under Tommy’s watch, the Dodgers way,” he said. “To still see him as a sort of patriarch of the Dodgers, you hear stories. It reinforces what we’re talking about.

“To have him around to bridge that gap from when he was managing to when I was playing to now when I’m managing, it’s definitely a good thing to have him around.”

Lasorda guided the Dodgers to two World Series titles while managing the team from 1976 to 1996. During his tenure, the Dodgers won four National League pennants and eight division titles.

Lasorda makes numerous appearances on behalf of the Dodgers and Major League Baseball, traveling often for charitable appearances, community events and visits to military personnel

Matt Adams Traded to the Braves

adamsmatt111

A few days back I got word that the Braves were intrested in Matt Adams due to their first baseman Freddie Freeman  being hit by a pitch from Toronto’s Aaron Loup. Freeman was leading the majors in slugging percentage when he was hurt, hitting .341 with 14 home runs. This afternoon the deal went down. The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight’s game with the San Francisco Giants that they have traded first baseman Matt Adams and cash considerations to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for minor league infielder Juan Yepez.

Braves general manager John Coppolella said Adams will be valuable to the Braves beyond his fill-in duty at first.

“He’s also played left field,” Coppolella said. “He’s a good bat off the bench. He will help us even when Freddie Freeman comes back to the Braves.”

Jace Peterson, a utility player, was the Braves’ first choice to take over at first base. Coppolella and president of baseball operations John Hart said the team had no first basemen in the minors ready to be a fill-in starter in the majors.

Coppolella said Adams is expected to join the team in time for Sunday’s game against Washington. He will be expected to handle the position, at least against right-handers.

Adams hit .292 with a homer and seven RBIs coming off the bench this season and playing some in the outfield. A move involving the 28-year-old Adams had been speculated since spring training after Matt Carpenter was picked to start at first base.

So his is this Juan Yepez? When Yepez was 19 he signed with the Braves organization as a non-drafted free agent in July 2014, out of Caracas, Venezuela. The right-handed hitting infielder compiled a .281 (125-for-445) batting average with 34 doubles, six home runs and 54 RBI in 120 games with three minor league affiliates since the start of the 2015 season. The 6-1, 200-pound Yepez opened the 2017 season at Single-A Rome, where he was batting .275 (39-for-142) with 13 doubles, one home run and 15 RBI in 35 games.

Yepez has a tall stance in the box, and he has an incredibly quick set of hands, which is what many viewed as his best raw tool when he was signed. Yepez can get the bat on a ball even when fooled, and as he continues to mature physically, he should be able to add more natural drive to the balls he hits. His home run this year was on a hanging slider, and it was a beautiful thing to watch him sit back on the pitch and trigger forward with such explosiveness and the ball just explode off of his bat.

I watch his approach at the plate, and that’s where I see some issues. In his pro career, that’s been an issue, certainly, as Yepez walked 5.4% of the time and struck out over 26% of the time in Danville last season after being promoted, and then he’s followed that up with nearly identical numbers this season (7.4%, 27.8%). His wrists probably play into that somewhat as he does have the ability to get to a lot of balls, and therefore is willing to expand the zone, but he has been guilty of expanding for more than he should be pursuing, especially on breaking pitches. The fielding is the biggest issue of all. Yepez struggles mightily in fielding balls that require him to range, and while he’s handled much of the first base work well, he’s been uncomfortable with digging a ball out of the dirt thus far, though with all due respect, he’s just learning the position, so if that’s what he still has to work out, I could handle that for a guy at low-A.

Cardinals Magazine continues its quarter-century anniversary campaign with a pair of inspirational stories in new edition. Cover subject Rick Ankiel opens up about his turbulent past and remarkable career, the reasons why he wrote his much-discussed book, The Phenomenon, and his plans for the future.  Then you’ll want to read our profile on José Martínez, who has overcome knee surgeries, a long haul through the minors and other challenges to ultimately become a significant contributor for the 2017 Cardinals.

Page after page, fans will enjoy the breadth of content in the new edition.  With the upcoming reunion of the 1967 World Champions this homestand, we visit with the team’s manager, legendary fan favorite Red Schoendienst, about each of the players he penciled into his everyday lineup.  Our player-centric departments feature #DearDexter, where All-Star centerfielder Dexter Fowler answers questions from fans; The Lynn-Sider, a monthly column written by Lance Lynn; and East Meets West, featuring the views from opposite sides of the country from West Virginia native Jedd Gyorko and California kid Greg Garcia.  And in keeping with our 25th anniversary season, you’ll love our season-long “Pages From Our Past” section, where we’ll showcase the people, performances and franchise-defining moments we watched and wrote about over an ever-changing quarter-century of Cardinals baseball.

Pick up this must-read issue at retail locations throughout Busch Stadium, including from vendors inside stadium gates, team store locations, portable red merchandise carts, Majestic and Cardinals Authentics stores inside Ballpark Village and the Cardinals Authentics Shop in Ford Plaza.  Throughout metro St. Louis, the magazine is available for purchase at major retailers like Cardinals Clubhouse mall stores, Dierbergs, Schnucks, Shop ‘n Save, QuikTrip and Walgreens.

Cardinals Insider with Ozzie Smith

Cardinals Insider, the club’s weekly half-hour new magazine television show, made its season debut on March 26 with new host Ozzie Smith.  Now in its second season, Cardinals Insider with Ozzie Smith is available within 17 television markets in eight states.  Over the offseason, a new digital newsroom was constructed within the Cardinals press box to house the team’s multimedia video unit.  Five full-time journalists were hired to provide fans with behind the scenes access and daily content for the team’s various digital and social platforms including cardinals.com, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The show features a mix of news, player profiles, exclusive interviews, in-depth features, and a look back in team history with exclusive content from the team’s large archive and extensive museum collection.  In addition to offering fans an unprecedented view behind the scenes with the team, the show also places a strong emphasis on fan engagement and leveraging the team’s social media to enrich the viewer experience.  New episodes air locally on KSDK every Sunday at 10:00 a.m.  More information about the show, including previous episodes and a full list of affiliates and show times, can be found at cardinals.com/insider.  (#CardsInsider)

·         The Second Annual Take Me Out To The Ballgame Talent Video Contest was launched in March, encouraging fans to submit videos of them singing their best rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”  The winning video, which will be selected by a fan vote, will be shown on the scoreboard at Busch Stadium before the Cardinals—Rockies game on July 26.  The winner will also be treated to a VIP experience that includes 12 tickets to the game.  Fans may submit their videos until May 21, followed by finalists being voted on by fans online from June 2-30 at cardinals.com/talent (winner to be announced July 3).
